WHAT: Since 1941, Luke AFB's mission has been to serve as a training base for America's fighter pilots and its allies. During this time, Luke has graduated more than 56,000 fighter pilots. Luke is the only active-duty F-16 training wing for the Air Force. All F-16 combat pilots and maintainers currently in Afghanistan and Iraq were trained at Luke.

WHY: Each of the state's military installations is critical to the nation's military preparedness and national security, as well as to Arizona's economy. In fact, the military industry represents one the state's largest industries. Luke AFB in Glendale is the largest military base in Arizona in terms of the number of personnel it employs and the economic impact it generates for the state. Luke alone contributes more than $2.1 billion annual to Arizona's economy.
