The assignment: Math Connection: Write a paragraph using as many addition, subtraction, multiplication, division fact problems that describe funny and strange creatures from space. For example: "This creature has 3x3 eyes, 6x2 hairs, 5-/5 toes, and 5/1 mouths." Write your problem out, and then your partner in your group needs to draw what you described.
This was orginally going to be a center project, but my class had a hard time with it, so we turned it into a full class writing/math/reading project. Oh boy did they have fun!
But we did have a few that were heart broken that the picture that their classmate drew did not "match" what they had in their head. I used this as an activity to show them how descriptive that they needed to be in their writing, as well as to work on their math, writing, and following directions skills.
