Tuskegee Airmen Exhibit Dedicated
A crowd of 240 people came to the Museum of Aviation in Warner Robins December 16 for a ceremonial ribbon cutting to officially dedicate and open a new Tuskegee Airman exhibit. Three "original" Tuskegee Airmen were in attendance: Leroy Eley and Edward Johnson from Atlanta, Georgia, and Raymond Williams from Austell, Georgia. The three World War II airmen were honored along with the nearly 15,000 other black Americans that made up the first units to fly and fight in World War II and lead the battle to desegregate the armed forces.
Former U.S. Ambassador and civil rights leader Andrew Jackson Young was the guest speaker for the event. Young praised the Tuskegee Airmen for being pioneers in the civil rights movement. And retired Major General Ron Smith, former commander of the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center, also gave a talk at the event. General Smith initiated the project to build the first Tuskegee Airmen exhibit which opened at the Museum in Hangar One in 1997. He said he was proud to have this recognition at the Museum of Aviation -- in his words "...the best Museum in the Air Force."
The new exhibit in the Scott Exhibit Hangar includes most of the original exhibit plus a new 30-foot long mural depicting a scene from Moton Field in Tuskegee Alabama where the Tuskegee Airmen trained. Several officers from Robins Air Force Base served as models in WWII uniforms to create the digital mural. They were amongst the crowd that surrounded the three "originals" for autographs at the conclusion of the program.
Dudley Bluhm, Deputy Director of the Museum of Aviation and head of the Exhibit Design Team said "Central Georgia and the younger generation can learn a lot about the struggle and journey of the Tuskegee Airmen through this new exhibit."
"We have a lot of kids in our area and they can come here and learn about this part of American history," said Bluhm. "Kids nowadays are looking for heroes and these are some great heroes and great people to pattern our lives after."
PHOTO: Gathered at the event were: (Back row) Captain William Williams Williams and Major Demetrius Brown from Robins AFB; original Tuskegee Airmen LeRoy Eley; John Stewart, member of the Tuskegee Airmen, Inc., Atlanta Chapter; and First Lieutenant Anthony Maxie and Maj Gen Bob McMahon from Robins AFB.
